What DMAE is and how it’s supposed to work

• DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) is a compound naturally present in small amounts in the brain and in some fish.

• One proposed mechanism: DMAE may increase levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) by acting as a choline precursor or enhancing choline metabolism. Acetylcholine is involved in memory, attention, muscle contraction, and more. 

• Because of that, DMAE is marketed as a “nootropic” (cognitive enhancer) and sometimes for “brain health” / “memory / focus”. 

• It also has been used in skincare/dermal products (outside of the sports supplement realm) for its potential to support skin firmness and reduce signs of ageing (via mechanisms like stabilising membranes, antioxidant effects).
