🌿 What It Is

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is an herbal extract derived from the berries of a small palm native to North America. The 21st Century supplement typically provides ~450 mg of Saw Palmetto fruit per vegetarian capsule and is taken as a daily dietary supplement.

21st Century’s formula is generally:

  • Vegetarian & gluten-free

  • Free from artificial flavors/colors and preservatives

  • Intended as a natural herbal supplement rather than a medicine.

🧠 How It Works

Saw palmetto is believed to act partially by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT plays a role in prostate enlargement and hair follicle shrinkage. By modulating this enzyme, saw palmetto may help support hormone balance and reduce the effects of DHT on certain tissues.

✅ Potential Benefits

1. Prostate & Urinary Support

Saw palmetto is popularly used for supporting prostate health and may help ease urinary symptoms associated with prostate enlargement (BPH), such as frequent urination or weak urinary flow in some users. Research results are mixed, but some studies report modest improvements.

2. Hair Health

Because DHT is linked to androgenic hair loss, saw palmetto is sometimes taken to support hair quality and reduce shedding. Some small studies suggest improvements in hair count and density, though its effect tends to be less pronounced than conventional medications (e.g., finasteride).

3. Hormone Balance

Saw palmetto may help moderate DHT levels, which can indirectly influence testosterone balance. The evidence here is preliminary and more research is needed.

4. Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Traditional and some preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory effects, which may contribute to its use in prostate and urinary support, but strong human data are limited.
